How do you display the Minecraft prior work guarantee?

Is there a keyboard shortcut or a way to show the prior work penalty(anvil) of an item in java edition?

Regarding the Minecraft prior work guarantee, the prior work penalty, is stored in the RepairCost tag of the item and I don't believe it is available in the UI. It can be accessed with a NBT viewer/editor outside of the game. In-game, you can observe it indirectly by placing the item in the anvil and changing the name. The resulting cost will be one more than the "prior work penalty", unless it hits the cap of 39.

i wish the game showed the repaircost value directly, because the anvil rename trick feels pretty clunky. still, the “cost minus one unless it caps at 39” rule is a good way to estimate it without nbt tools. i even had a thread get derailed when someone dropped https://playastronaut.com/bonuses/ into an anvil discussion and it was just noise. later another person argued in comments over https://play-vortex-game.com/bonuses/ and it buried the actual explanation. i’d rather keep it to nbt viewers and the anvil test than wade through links such as https://high-flyer-game.com/bonuses/
