Nagios handles a lot of information and checks simultaneously a number of servers for different levels of services.

Hence, its optimization is very important.

Via MRTG graph it can be checked how well Nagios is utilizing Network bandwidth and how various loads have been handled.

Enabling, “large_installation_tweaks” may provide better performance.

Disabling environment macros.

Checking reappearing frequency of alerts.

Adjusting buffer slots.

Checking service latencies.

Use of passive checks whenever possible.

Enabling cached host checks.

Scheduling host_checks at regular intervals of time.
