When you connect a new data source to Tableau, it automatically categorizes each field as dimensions and measures in the data pane. This categorization is dependent on the type of data these fields contain.

All the fields which have fixed values like Name, Zip Code, etc. will be categorized as dimension and all the fields which can attain continuous values will be categorized in Measures.

If you think some fields have been incorrectly assigned, then you can convert a dimension to measure and vice versa.

By default, all dimensions will be shown in blue and all measures in green color. When we use a dimension, all value of it will be used while measures will be aggregated.
